The New Economy Initiative (NEI) serves as a connector and convener for business support organizations in southeast Michigan, while also providing grants to those organizations and advocating for entrepreneurs.

The 2025 Annual Report highlights how NEI, a special project of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, helps build the small business support infrastructure entrepreneurs need to find the right resources, making the following outcomes possible.

Jordan Smith went from training clients online and in facilities to opening his first brick-and-mortar gym called Just Elevate Fitness Club. Amira Abuhmoud launched Dearborn Balloon Decor at 17 and is now supporting 15 events a month. Kyle Dubay and Bo Shepherd were able to grow their staff at Woodward Throwbacks to nearly 10 people, with projects booked months in advance. After nearly a decade of pop-ups, Cortney Hamilton was able to open a permanent location for her business, For the Love of Cheesecake. And Eduardo Salas and Melisa Hernandez are putting the finishing touches on Cafe Clark, a new coffee shop in Southwest Detroit.
