Entrepreneurs take 'Shark Tank'-style plunge in Detroit

Pitch competitions, several of which have sprung up nationwide and in Michigan, have become popular, spurred in part by reality-TV shows like the “Shark Tank.”

“We have a great idea,” cofounder Jerry Rucker, 30, said. “We just need a little capital behind us.”

​The Detroit event, an offshoot of a program started last year in New Orleans, was aimed at boosting the number of minority-founded, venture-backed companies in high-tech and high-growth sectors.
